Ashtanga Yoga caught the West by storm. David Swenson happened to be in the eye of that storm. It was 1969 when as a mere teenager, David Swenson with the help of his brother Doug, now also an expert Ashtanga practitioner, decided to learn yoga. Keen to use whatever material they could lay their hands on they studied and practised Hatha Yoga.
The original style of Ashtanga was taught and expounded by a yoga master, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.
David Swenson, through meeting with directly-taught yoga enthusiasts David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff in California in 1973, happened to be around when K.Pattabhi Jois came to the USA by invitation of Williams and Gilgoff.
It was this chance encounter that began David on a journey that took him to Mysore and a lifetime devotion to Ashtanga yoga. In Mysore, he studied Ashtanga under K. Pattabhi Jois himself. From those early determined days as a teenage enthusiast yogi, David is now recognised as one of the foremost teachers and practitioners of Ashtanga in the West.
