Sachdev performs the classical music of India, a culture and continent with a two thousand year old musical tradition.
The bansuri, the bamboo wooden flute, has always had associations in India with Lord Krishna, the flute playing saintly figurehead in Indian religion. Krishna was said to draw the hearts of devotees to him through his flute playing and certainly it is true that Sachdev's renditions on the bansuri open the heart of the listener to help create sacred space for contemplation and reflection.
The complexities of Indian music lie in the subtle variations on a theme, the ornamentation of notes, modal colouring and in the interplay between the flute and tabla, the two piece Indian drum set.
Since each note stands alone, special care and attention is given to the purity of intonation. Sachdev displays the very essence of this demand and skill in his playing.
All Indian classical music is rooted in the vocal tradition and the flute is regarded especially close to the voice, capable of many subtle nuances of the vocal style.
