The transformation that he saw in some of his friends after they had spent a few days with Ram Dass, provoked Krishna Das to speed through a winter's night, suffer sleep deprivation, face volcanic emotional and personal upheavals and subsequently find himself by the 1970's, committed to several years devotional service at the feet of his guru, Maharaj-ji in India.
There he practiced Kirtan - the chanting of the names of God - and went about devotional seva under the watchful and compassionate eye of Maharaj-ji. Having been appointed a pujari (priest) and in the Durga temple at the ashram, he then immersed himself in Bhakti Yoga (devotional).
Shortly after, he was instructed by Maharaja-ji to quit India and go serve in America.
Confused and unable to know how or through what he would commission this request, Krishna Das eventually promised his guru that as service to him he would "..sing to you in America."
This innocent intention committed Das to a path that has led him becoming one of the leading lights in the spiritual awakening movement in the West. His chanting, devotional singing and voice have inspired, uplifted and urged many to find inner strength and belief in themselves and to deepen their work on the spiritual path.
His commitment and devotion has helped many begin and develop changes that many years had begun for him
His work now takes him around many yoga centres and like gatherings and he has been asked to sing for saints and yogis around the world.
Ram Dass, his original inspiration and exemplar of spiritual devotion was himself taught by Krishna Das. He says of him:
"Krishna Das is an example of someone whose heartsongs open the channels to God."
In his search to open and purify his heart Das has travelled widely in India and elsewhere, absorbing the ancient wisdom and cultures that have served seekers well over thousands of years.
His study of Vipassana under S.N. Goenka and other Buddhist meditation masters has enabled this inspirer of devotional Being to share and encourage all who meet and experience his extraordinary ability, to connect to the Divine within themselves.
